To tell the story of how something got started, you usually start at the beginning. That, however, proves a bit difficult when it comes to explaining roulette’s past. That’s because there is a lot of disagreement over just where and how the game began.

How it All Began

For those who do believe the game started in France, most think it was invented by 17th century mathematician Blaise Pascal. Many others, however, think the game is actually Chinese in origin and that it reached Europe through the Dominican Monks who had a great deal of trade and communication with the Chinese.

Despite the arguments over the game’s turbulent beginnings, every historian is certain that the game grew exponentially in popularity thanks to Prince Charles of Monaco. He knew of the game and suggested it be used as a way to help his people out of their financial trouble. While it didn’t accomplish that completely or at least not in the way the Prince had in mind, it did become a real hit among the people and it has been that way ever since.

The growing popularity of the game, however, is the only thing that has stayed constant. There have been many changes and redesigns to the online roulette wheel and to the various rules of the game. Even today, on online gaming sites, you can find lots of different forms and variations of this popular game. The most common wheels you will spot, however, are the American and European wheels.
